Mzimba Secondary School Alumni Association Saturday donated 18 beds to the school worth 583,400 as a way of overcoming shortage of beds at the institution.

According to General Secretary of the Association, Barnett Phiri through the assessment that they made in 2011 it was discovered that the school lacked beds in both boys and girls hostels.
“When we came in 2011 we noted that the school lacked beds. As an Association we pledged to donate 60 beds in order to arrest the problem,” he said.

The new beds are expected to be located to one of the hostels, Mulanje hostel which is under maintenance.

“We will try to fill Mulanje hostel with beds. Excellent performers will be occupying the beds based on merit system of selection,” he said.

Phiri asked students at the school to refrain from vandalizing the furniture. He advocated for a proper use of the donation.

In his remarks the General Secretary asked other Alumni from various schools in the country to take a leading role and help their former schools to overcome problems that they are experiencing.
“Let us remember where we are coming from and we should assist government in combating some of the problems being faced the schools,” ha said.

In his words acting head teacher for Mzimba Secondary School, Timothy Magagula Kumwenda thanked the Alumni Association saying that the donation has arrived at the right time.

“The Alumni are people who are thinking about the school. They have done a recommendable job in trying to solve a problem of two to three students sleeping in a single bed,” he said.

The Association also awarded 12 best mock exam students in classes of form 1 to 4 each five thousand kwacha. It also donated a ball to the school’s sports department.
